Excellently staged and you may wisely dialogued, it’ll have no high problem within the traditions off the incredibly ugly name.” [ 8 ]

The brand new film’s publisher and director, Robert Rossen, sets up an excellent multidimensional chess game, to have mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, his employer (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), an effective cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may a good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever cousin (Nina Foch) worked at local casino and you may dated good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The brand new caustically epigrammatic program, the new cast’s suavely controlled gestures out of like and you may menace, and Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you may stylishly assertive photographs (and additionally his governmental conscience) get this pugnacious but really intricate spectacle a low profile classic of the genre.” [ ten ]

Adept shows because of the Cock Powell, because a betting home overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, since an authorities inspector, together with up the rating . Even though the patch follows a common trend, the latest characterizations are new together with shows sufficient to help you overbalance. Dialogue are terse and you may relevant, steering clear of the sentimental, phoney touching. Strange camera bases come along once in a while to help you heighten appeal and momentarily arrest the interest. Good teamplay by the Robert Rossen, doubling because the manager-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, totally new author and you will member manufacturer, along with supports making it a mellow development.” [ 11 ]

Its mostly a matter of viewing Mr. Powell undergo his paces stylishly if you find yourself a big shed out-of stars and you can stars provide him standard support. Evelyn Keyes takes on the great absolutely nothing woman whom brings out the finest in your and Ellen Drew ‘s the sleek and you will slinky vixen just who becomes your on jams. Thomas Gomez is greasy since the villain and you may Lee J. Cobb does a separate ready concert tour just like the a weary police inspector which ultimately shuts the fact. A great amount of consuming and you may puffing is performed by the every worried.” [ several ]
